1 Year Appointment

Last week the girls had their 1 year well baby checkup. I'm pleased to say that the Dr thinks the girls look fabulous! Ellery is 18 lbs 8oz which is the 10th percentile on the full term growth chart. Emily is 16lbs on the dot and not yet on the chart, but they both make up for it in length. Ellery is 30 inches and Emily is 29 which puts them in the 35-50ish percentile. Yahoo! It's almost time to move them to different car seats. The infant carriers that they are in now say they fit babies up to 26inches. Oops!! This is good news because each one weighs almost 30 pounds with a baby in it - so it's not easy to tote them around in just the car seats.

Ellery seems to be just cruising along. She's very vocal now and is literally standing and cruising from the couch to the ottoman to the fireplace. I saw her lift her leg to crawl up the stairs for the first time the other day. Baby gate here we come! Emily really only pulls up to her knees or if you stand her up she'll stay for a while. We also took her to PT last week and they gave me some things to work on with her. In just a few days I saw her go from her knees to standing for the very first time. Progress is slow but at least she's progressing...right? She still hates to sit so we need to work on that. She doesn't have a lot of balance so she tends to get thrown around a bit when big sis Ellery comes to play. But she's started waving...something that Ellery has yet to do - so I guess it's a little give and take with whose learning what first.

Both girls are eating wonderfully! They are into exploring new solids/purees but Emily seems to be a bit more adventurous. They love their gerber puff cereals but they tend to stuff more than one in at a time which usually results and gagging and spitting up either their previous meal or bottle. Not fun, especially when I'm trying to get them to eat as much as possible.

We are having so much fun with them now. They have the most amazing personalities and are hilarious to be around. They keep learning new noises and sounds it just cracks me up. They are also going through their stranger danger/clingy phase so they want to be held by mommy & daddy a lot and cry when I leave them at daycare. I feel bad/guilty saying this, but I like this stage so much more than the infant stage. I think I'm a much happier person. Maybe it's because we had two infants at once and I felt overwhelmed & stressed, or because I was so afraid of the girls getting sick, or feeling like I needed to protect them from everything and everyone, but I honestly never was able to take the time and just enjoy the girls until a few months ago. I have some regrets, but I can't say I would have changed my behavior too drastically. I'm just going to enjoy every day going forward with my little miracles and watch them grow into amazing little people!

Reflection is good! That first year I don't remember much either. They are more fun the older they get but watch out, being mobile brings a whole new level of stress! Baby gate galore!
